WingWoman Lebanon: reusable plads combatting period poverty

In the midst of Lebanon's crippling economic crisis, a lesser-known but equally pressing issue has been on the rise: period poverty. Since 2019, the price of menstrual pads has skyrocketed by a staggering 500 percent, leaving many women struggling to afford basic hygiene products. However, amidst these challenges, a beacon of hope has emerged in the form of "WingWoman Lebanon."

Conceived by Meelie Pemberton and launched in collaboration with Stand for Women following the devastating 2020 Beirut blast, WingWoman Lebanon is more than just a livelihood program. It's a lifeline for women in Lebanon, offering not only economic opportunities but also a chance to combat the pervasive gender inequality exacerbated by period poverty.

At its core, WingWoman is a community-driven initiative that empowers Syrian and Palestinian women by providing them with the skills and resources to produce affordable and reusable menstrual pads. What began as simple sewing classes evolved into a sustainable business model, with women in the Shatila refugee camp now employed in pad production. As the project grows, so does its impact, with plans to train more women and expand production.

For Pemberton, the motivation behind WingWoman goes beyond addressing the immediate economic crisis. It's about challenging the systemic inequalities that perpetuate gender disparity. "Period poverty is creating inequality," she emphasizes. "If you don't target period poverty, you're not dealing with that."

But WingWoman's impact extends beyond economic empowerment. The initiative also aims to break down taboos and stigmas surrounding menstruation through awareness sessions on menstrual health. By providing a safe and comfortable space for discussion, WingWoman is not only providing practical solutions but also fostering a culture of openness and empowerment.

One of the key features of WingWoman's approach is its emphasis on reusable pads. Not only are they more affordable and eco-friendly, but they also offer a practical solution to the current crisis. With a single pack of WingWoman pads lasting the equivalent of approximately 792 disposable pads, the benefits are undeniable.

Furthermore, the pads are designed with comfort and effectiveness in mind, catering to women of all flow levels. Whether it's the small, medium, or large size, WingWoman pads offer a leak-proof and absorbent alternative to traditional disposable pads.

As Lebanon continues to grapple with economic turmoil, initiatives like WingWoman Lebanon serve as a beacon of hope, demonstrating the power of community-driven solutions to address systemic issues. By empowering women and challenging societal norms, WingWoman is not just providing pads—it's paving the way for a more equitable future for all.
